Is Long Term Sickness Impacting Your Hiring?

The ONS’s latest report shows another record for long term sickness. Rather than being unemployed, these people are categorised as economically inactive as they are neither in work, nor looking for work. What impact does this have on your business? We believe these are valuable skill-sets who are no longer accessible, contributing to candidate short markets and driving up wages due to both inflation and this competition for skills and resource.

Without a crystal ball it’s hard to predict what the future holds, looking at historic ONS data we can see declines in long-term sick and the UK has experienced people returning to work. Even if this were to occur, we understand each business will have short term objectives that they want to achieve. Fortunately the overall economic inactive figure has fallen due to a return to work of those aged 50 to 64, alongside those who have been looking after family returning to work.
