Machine Shop Manager

Permanent position based in South West Birmingham

Purpose of the position 

  • To ensure quality engineering of components throughout the Machine Shop
  • Be responsible for the day to day activities of all work through the Machine Shop
  • Ensure health and safety within the workplace
  • Managing both the people and the manufacturing process towards improvement and the maximum balance of output and quality though successful planning, organisation, optimisation, maintenance and health and safety.

 

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Control the daily operation of machine shop personnel to provide a safe, secure and efficient working environment.
  • Report to Production Director
  • Adhere to and encourage health and safety methods and procedures including reporting accidents with necessary supporting documentation i.e. witness statements and photos.
  • Drive continuous improvement targeting an improvement in quality and communication with shop floor
  • Responsible for communication at all levels within the Dept. i.e. daily/weekly briefings Team leaders/operators and updating of communication boards.
  • Champion a training program to sustain and grow key skills including updating of training logs and matrices
  • Responsible for recruitment
  • Manage, support and mentor supervisors and shop floor staff
  • Responsible for annual Performance and development reviews and operator development
  • Responsible for investigating excessive inefficiencies and overruns.
  • Train, plan and sustain machine shop 5S activities.
  • Plan and implement CI projects.
  • Create visual machine shop metrics.
  • Responsible for working to the plan issued by the Production & Planning Manager.
  • Responsible for ensuring shifts and manning is planned to optimise output and managing overtime when necessary as well as managing holidays and absences by ensuring cover is always available wherever possible.
  • Responsible for Quality within the machine Shop.
  • Performing root cause where necessary and in an agreed timeframe.
  • Responsible for reporting Maintenance issues on plant & equipment.
  • Responsible for updating existing and writing new Risk Assessments.
  • Carry out other duties when necessary such as:
  • Capital expenditure projects
